1914
The division was primarily formed from volunteers at the beginning of the First World War as part of the mobilization. In 1914, it was under the XVI Army Corps and was exclusively deployed on the Western Front for the remainder of the war. 1914 October 18 to November 30: Battle of Ypres, occupied Passchendaele on October 20. December 1 to April 21: Trench warfare on the Yser. 1915 April 22 to May 25: Battles around Ypres. April 22 to 23: Major breakthrough over Pilkem, Langemarck to the heights north of Ypres (first gas attack on the German side). May 26 to September 16, 1916: Trench warfare on the Yser.
